Wiki Us a Bio/History: the rundown.

Elaborate, if necessary:

personality
Gin is a man that all but radiates evil. Outwardly flippant to a point where it could be deemed playful, many feel unsettled by his presence - but due to his ever present grin and teasing nature, it is hardly ever acknowledged. He is extremely level headed, a quality that allows him to maintain his outward persona with little trouble even when faced with forthright accusations of crimes so despicable as murder. It is rare that anyone comes to trust him, and his relationships are (for the most part) confined to idle banter among his peers.

Proving a prodigal student, Gin is also extremely intelligent - another contributing factor to his unfortunate penchant for the deranged. He is a sadist, but in a subtler light than those who would go to such lengths as to draw blood for satisfaction; he much prefers psychological games. If caught in the act he is always quick to deny any involvement, brushing it off in his usual careless manner. It seems as if Gin truly does only view others as a source of amusement, a somewhat sociopathic outlook that is only reinforced by his nonchalance toward his own actions.

He rarely demonstrates guilt - in fact, he outright denies it in his casual chiding of others where they cause harm. More often than not, when he is there to witness such scuffles, he has some form of influence on their initiation. The only times Gin demonstrates any manner of sincerity are during high points in battle or when deep in thought; his peers are otherwise met with his usual facetious persona.

Sporting a naturally restless soul, he is known to wander from place to place without informing even his closest friends - an unfortunate trait that seems to be the basis of his boredom and consequent deviation from any path of remote good.

history
Gin remains one of the more cryptic characters in the series, his past generally well guarded as his less attractive traits. It is known that he grew up in Rukongai, as did many of his peers - though he would only come to form a lasting relationship with one. In a rare act of good will that is all but gone by the time we meet him present day, Gin saved a starving Matsumoto Rangiku. The action successfully planted the seed of their friendship, which only continued to grow over the years. Despite his tendency to wander, they remained in contact through the course of their education and induction into the Gotei 13.

Ichimaru was recognized as a prodigy, and completed his courses within a year. The prompt conclusion of his lessons and his undeniable talent landed him a seat within the 5th division. He was not satisfied with the position, however, and thus killed the man who held the third - successfully attaining it for himself. His Captain, Aizen, took notice of him, and ultimately made him his lieutenant - a role which Gin fulfilled until he claimed a Captain's position for himself.

Rather unpopular among his peers, Gin seemed to revel in the discomfort he caused them - constantly spurring pointless conversations and purposefully touching on sensitive subjects only to flit away from them just as quickly, a habit that never quite fled him. The dislike he spurned effectively served its purpose when Captain Aizen's plot to fake his own death went underway, as the other Captains immediately pointed fingers at Ichimaru - suspecting no further fowl play than his own.

It served as distraction enough, and ultimately Aizen rose again to secure his goal - the attainment of the Hogyouku - which would allow for the creation of Arrancar. Gin revealed himself to have been a part of the plot the whole time. Though his personal motives remain questionable, he rises to Hueco Mundo with a sincere apology to Rangiku - presumably to aid Aizen in his conquest.

abilities
Still a Shinigami in every technical sense of the word, Gin retains the same powers he did whilst in Soul Society. He has full use of his zanpakutou, and retains the knowledge of high level offensive and defensive spells - though he prefers swordplay to anything else, and will likely hardly notice that they are dampened.

Though the true extent of Gin's power is not seen in the series, it is assumed that he is a powerful foe. Not only are his fellow captains readily convinced that he was capable of killing Aizen, but he also holds his own against Hitsugaya, another noteworthy fighter, with little trouble. His peers seem to maintain some knowledge of the fact that he is dangerous even before his manipulations come to light.

His sword, Shinso, resembles a wakizashi in its sealed form. Its secondary release (Shikai) is the only one we have yet seen in canon; it extends the blade toward his foe at a high speed, and generally does not fail to impale them. Where it does, the weight of the weapon itself does not change - leaving him free to eradicate numerous enemies at once.

Though Gin is capable of Bankai, his release has yet to be seen in canon.

What are they bringing to Nuadoria?: his uniform, and Shinso.

Third-Person Sample:

For once, Ichimaru Gin was not smiling.

This was not Karakura Town. If it was Karakura Town, some naughty Shinigami had done something particularly unpleasant to him on the way down. In the back of his mind, some portion where his brain was still functioning rapidly as the rest spun keenly from its handle, Gin knew that that wasn’t the case. There was no Reiatsu to be felt. Not Aizen’s, not the Arrancars’, not the Shinigami undoubtedly waiting to engage them in what was supposed to be an entertaining battle.

His hand still rested on Shinso’s hilt as he crumbled to one knee. He hadn’t been wounded – he hadn’t hit his head, so why was the ground spinning beneath him? His unoccupied palm flattened to the concrete, pressing firmly in some attempt to rouse himself from this… whatever this was. He was impervious to the sensation of gravel digging into his skin, pale knuckles further whitening with the harsh pressure he applied.

He needed to get a hold of himself. He was gonna die like this, if he insisted on crawling all over the place like a dog – that was a little too unbecoming for what was supposed to turn into the big day. Breathe - that was it, breathe as much as a damned soul like his could. The Earth was spinning to a stop beneath him, but it was a long while from when it stopped to the point where Gin saw fit to lift his head. There was a flash of red – eyes he’d held wide for the past few moments vanishing into mere slits as he scowled forward.

No. Not Karakura town at all. Not any town he recognized, for that matter.

His breath was still somewhat labored as he rose shakily to his feet. It was well hidden, hand sweeping from the hilt of his zanpakutou with practiced grace. Gin was glad for his sleeves; they hid his hands, both of which were still trembling.

“Well, well,” he addressed no-one in particular in his usual lilting tone, corners of his lips quirking just so. “Seems’ve finally landed m’self somewhere I don’t wanna be.”

First-Person Sample:

[voice]
This ain’t somethin’ one finds himself wantin’ ta wake up to in the mornin’. I kinda had an important meetin’ ta get to t’day, but looks like that’s on hold whether I like it or not.

[ a soft chuckle ]

Anyone be so kind as t’tell me where I’ve ended up? ‘ll pay ya back sometime, Shinigami's honour.
